When buying a large TV of 65 inches or above, there are some key factors we need to keep in mind, which may not be as important for smaller TVs. Sometimes, a lack of some capabilities or inferior capabilities gets magnified in larger-sized TVs, affecting the overall picture quality.
I researched over 50 large TVs to help you shortlist the best. First, large TVs will magnify the differences in display technology. Better yet, go for Mini-LED or OLED for the best picture quality if you do have the budget.
Except for some Sony TVs, all the other TVs in this comparison are QLED, Mini-LED or OLED TVs.
On larger TVs, high dynamic range matters more. So, do look for TVs that have Dolby Vision and HDR10+,
And pair it with a premium streaming subscription of Netflix or Jio Hotstar or whatever your preferred streaming service is, which supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+. For better HDR impact in large TVs, we also need to look for TVs with better brightness.
Refresh Rate of TVs
While most content streamed is 60fps or less, for which 60 hertz is sufficient for smaller TVs, due to its large size, 60 hertz becomes insufficient for large TVs, leading to motion blur. So consider TVs with 100 hertz or above, especially for sports, action movies and gaming. For casual viewing of TV shows, 60 hertz is still sufficient.
Processing Power
Processing is where the biggest difference comes into play between budget and premium TVs.
With premium TVs like LG, Samsung and Sony, the processor can handle much more advanced upscaling of content, motion processing to minimize motion blur, support a wider color gamut and AI-powered processing for a great picture quality.
In addition, these TVs will have faster processors to handle UI lag when you’re browsing as well, which is convenient. Lastly, the viewing distance for a 65-inch TV needs to be at least 8 to 10 feet, while for a 75-inch TV, it needs to be at least 10 to 12 feet.
To help identify the best large screen TV, I researched over 50 large screen TVs of 65 and 75 inches to narrow it down for you. While there are many large screen TVs under 50,000 rupees, I don’t highly recommend it for sports, action movies and gaming due to all the reasons I mentioned earlier. It will perform okay for casual TV viewing.
The Bloppong QLED TV
I have only one recommendation for you at this budget and it is the Bloppong QLED TV. This TV is available in both 65 and 75 inches sizes. It has a refresh rate of 60Hz only, uses Quantum Dot technology for vibrant colors and supports Dolby Vision for enhanced picture quality.
It does run on Google TV and uses a MediaTek Quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage for a decent browsing experience. It also has reasonably good speakers of 60W and supports Dolby Atmos for an immersive sound.
While it does support MEMC, at this large size, the visuals do have some motion blur in fast-paced scenes. As for the cons, some users have reported a laggy browsing experience and subpar Dolby Vision performance.
Under 75k Budget segment
In the under 75,000 segment, you start getting very decent performance in large-sized TVs with a very good picture quality across sports, action movies, and gaming.
The Hisense Q7M
This is a QLED TV with 4K Ultra HD resolution and refresh rate up to 144Hz. It gives very smooth visuals for all types of content.
It uses Quantum Dot technology, supports Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, and Full-Array Local Dimming for vibrant colors and good contrast. It runs on the Vida OS and supports Apple Airplay for ease of casting from your Apple devices as well.
As for the cons, it uses the Vida operating system which users find very non-intuitive. In very brightly lit rooms, brightness is low and contrast levels are not comparable to higher priced models. Overall, it’s a good budget option for a large size TV.
The Vu Masterpiece QLED TV
The pricing you see in the image is for the 75-inch model. The 65-inch model is currently out of stock but does fall under 75k. With a 144Hz refresh rate and support for HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision, it offers vibrant visuals with a good contrast. It has one of the best sound outputs, a 124W output from 5 speakers for immersive audio.
As for the cons, some users have reported smearing issues during gaming but overall, for content viewing, it performs great.
Under the 1 lakh segment
We start seeing premium brands like Sony, LG and Samsung as well as advanced technologies like mini LEDs and OLEDs.
The Sony Bravia 3
This is the only LED TV in my recommendations as with the Triluminos Pro technology, it supports over a billion colours, offering enhanced picture quality. While this TV is great for viewing content, sports and action movies, it is not great for gaming. As it does not support gaming features like variable refresh rate or VRR. In summary, great for viewing different types of content except gaming.
The Hisense U7K Mini LED TV
This combines advanced technology with excellent performance, mini LED with quantum dot for vibrant colors, HDR 10 plus and Dolby Vision support, a 144Hz refresh rate for smooth motion. The brightness levels and contrast levels of this TV are excellent, making it suitable for viewing in both bright and dark rooms. Even the audio is decent with a 49 watt output with two speakers and a subwoofer.
As for the cons, similar to what I mentioned before, the VIDA operating system is quite non-intuitive, and some users have issues with the build quality, although that is not very prevalent. In summary, a great large TV option for viewing all types of content, including gaming.
Under 1.5 lakh segments
I have three recommendations from premium brands. Except for Sony, the other two are QLED TVs.
The Sony Bravia X90L LED TV
This TV is powered by Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR, which improves overall image quality and upscaling as well. This TV has vibrant colors, deep blacks, and a sharp resolution. It has a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth motion in fast-paced scenes, making it suitable for sports and action movies. With a full array of gaming features, this TV is also suitable for avid gamers.
As for the cons, the audio output leaves much to be desired. So, consider adding a soundbar or a home theatre system if you do purchase this.
The LG QNET 88 Tv
With quantum dots and nanocell technology, this LG TV offers perfect color accuracy, vibrant colors, and brightness, giving a crisp display even in brightly lit rooms. With a high refresh rate, support for Dolby Vision, AI super upscaling, and support for gaming features, it is a good option for various types of content, even fast-paced content and gaming.
As for the cons, this TV only has a 20-watt speaker output, so an external soundbar or a home theatre system becomes essential.
The Samsung Frame QLED TV
If aesthetics and display are key for you, then the Samsung frame is ideal. The matte display reduces reflections and enhances details in various scenes. As for the cons, while it does support a 120Hz refresh rate and MEMC, which offers a vibrant display for fast-paced content, some issues have been reported about motion blur, but not too many.
The ultra-premium segment
We get TVs with the best display technologies, but not too many. Next in the ultra-premium segment, we get TVs with the best display technologies, Mini LED and OLED.
The Sony Bravia 7 Mini LED TV
This TV is good for watching movies and TV shows in dark rooms due to its high contrast ratio and vibrant colors. With a 2000 nits brightness. It is also able to give great performance in a brightly lit room as well, so works for both home theatre setups as well as bright rooms. With a 120Hz refresh rate and a fast response time, it is able to handle motion in fast paced scenes and sports with ease. Overall, a great all-round TV.
As for the cons, it only has two HDMI 2.1 ports, which is limiting when connecting multiple devices like soundbars and gaming consoles.
The Samsung S90 OLED TV
This TV is superb for any usage, casual viewing, sports, action movies and gaming. With a wide viewing angle, it is a great option for watching sports and TV shows in a group. Since it is an OLED TV, it provides great contrast for usage in dark rooms.
As for the cons, this TV has an automatic brightness limiter which can dim the overall picture if a scene becomes too bright. Some viewers find this annoying. This can be disabled however, so it’s not a major con in my opinion.
The ultra-premium Sony Bravia 8 OLED TV
Being an OLED TV, the picture quality is remarkable in dark rooms due to its near-infinite contrast ratio. It also works well in bright rooms due to higher brightness. Similar to the Samsung S90D, it has a wide viewing angle, so ideal for viewing from different parts of the room, not just straight ahead.
And with a high refresh rate and a very fast response time, there is no motion blur detected as well, so ideal for fast-paced scenes, action sports and movies, as well as gaming. All in all, this premium TV is perfect for both entertainment and gaming.
